Daisy's Last Ride
A Children's Book on Substack?
I’m going to try something different with this post. As we move deeper into the season, I want to explore an under-developed aspect of leadership: followership. We have hundreds of books on how to lead well, but far fewer on how to follow.
I went looking for a children’s book to help us explore this theme, and I couldn’t find one that resonated. Then I remembered one I wrote last summer — part of a series called The Concrete Canoe Chronicles that explores t-shaped themes through engineering competitions.
Here’s what I’m trying: I’m publishing the second book, Daisy’s Last Ride, right here today. Then in a couple of days, I’ll write a reflection on it, similar to the other posts this season. This gives you a chance to experience the story I’m basing my analysis on.
The post may feel a bit longer than typical here (which run about 1500 words). The story is only 1,000 or so, but grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the pictures - I’ve tried my best. This is quite different and out of the box for me — let me know what you think!
I’d love to hear your thoughts about today’s out of the box post.

I love the story and the drawings! It has MBTI written (and drawn) all over it--how a team can complement each other's God-given gifts to compensate for those areas where some aren't as gifted. In fact, one can look at the "t" in t-Shaped from a team perspective where it's the leader's responsibility to make sure there is adequate technical and relational skills and depth in all the right places so that synergy happens and the team reaches its God-given potential.
Keep writing and drawing these great stories, sir!
